AWCI WA Apprentice of the Year Competition

Each year AWCI WA runs an annual Apprentice Challege which tests the skills, knowledge and competencies of apprentices through a construction challenge.

The Apprentice of the Year is awarded to the most outstanding individual, in addition to two nominees representing WA in the Trans-Tasman Apprentice Challenge held at the AWCI ANZ Annual Conference 2017 on Hamilton Island, Queensland. Both are highly coveted awards and present great opportunities for apprentices to develop their skill and receive recognition from the industry.

On the day of the Challenge, apprentices are:

  • Given a plan to construct, sheet and set a project

  • Interviewed by the judges on industry related topics

  • Asked to give a 2-5 min presentation to the judges on their future in the industry.

The Apprentice of the Year will be announced at the AWCI WA Annual Awards Gala evening in Perth.

Winners from 2016

The Apprentice of the Year Challenge was held at South Metropolitan Tafe on 18 May and it was a very successful day. Nine apprentices participated and the work completed by all competitors were of high quality. It was great to see employers, workers and family of some of the apprentices attend and be part of the day.

At the AWCI WA Awards of Excellence Gala Dinner 2016, the Apprentice of the Year Award was awarded to Coen Trevenen from Premier Ceilings (below left) and the Apprentice of the year Runner up was awarded to Teariki Rawiri from SP Ceilings (below right). Special thanks to Jim Swain from Wallboard Tools for sponsoring this category and also donating a $300 gift voucher to both Coen and Teariki to spend at Wallboard Tools.
